History

I am only referencing and quoting things I find on the internet, so please do not consider this page the most authoritative source known or available.  That said, given that everything I quote/reference here are archived resources from the 1980s, it's at least period-correct documentation, or user opinions.

Since history is harder to test in a lab than actual physical hardware and vintage magnetic tape encoding signals, please use your best discretion as to accepting the accuracy of everything below.
